Marriage Globes

Oh, what lovely stories these pieces have to tell. These delightful tufted whatnots were used for the bride to place her wedding coronet and any other mementos from the wedding and thereafter. They originated in France in the late part of the 19th century and were popular through WWI. They didn’t appear to be popular in the USA so the ones we see today probably were used by a French or European bride and groom. It was once thought that all the mirrors on the done signified the years a couple was engaged before marriage but it is now believed that the mirrors have different meanings depending on their shapes. In fact, just about everything on these wedding domes has a meaning. Some of the mirrors were symbols of the number of children the couple wanted in the future, while others did in fact mean the number of years the couple was engaged. The domes were given to the couple upon their engagement, by the parents or the godparents. The gold plated symbols and mirrors that were placed on the dome were symbols of the couples hopes and dreams. After the wedding and as years passed other treasured objects were added. The golden symbols and mirrors tell the story of the soon to be wed couples desires. The later placed souvenirs tell the story as their life unfolded.

Some of my globes have tufted pillows that are detachable and were used by the ring bearer to carry the wedding rings.  I have another that is a vitrine rather than a globe.
